Zicam Lawsuit Reportedly Settled

. By
Kansas City, MOA man who filed a Zicam lawsuit alleging he suffered from Zicam side effects has reportedly settled his lawsuit. The man claimed he developed permanent Zicam smell loss after using the nasal spray just one time.

According to a news release at insurancenewsnet.com (01/06/12), Raymond Carter Smith used Zicam nasal spray once in 2009. Shortly after using it, he suffered a burning sensation in his nose that lasted for around 30 minutes. After that, he discovered that he had completely lost his senses of taste and smell.

Some Zicam products were recalled in 2009, after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about their use. At the time, the FDA noted that certain Zicam products were associated with the loss of sense of smell, which could be permanent.

"The FDA has received more than 130 reports of loss of sense of smell associated with the use of these three Zicam products," the agency warned (06/16/09). "In these reports, many people who experienced a loss of smell said the condition occurred with the first dose; others reported a loss of the sense of smell after multiple uses of the products." The products included in the warning were Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size, which was already discontinued.

The FDA was further concerned that the Zicam products could cause permanent damage when they were being used to treat a problem—a cold—that generally goes away on its own.

Smith filed his lawsuit, which was then transferred to federal court in a multidistrict litigation that reportedly involved more than 1,800 plaintiff's cases. The lawsuits alleged that Zicam was defective and caused anosmia—the loss of sense of smell. Participants in the lawsuit reportedly received between a few hundred dollars up to $25,000, depending on their injuries. The defendants, including Matrixx Initiatives Inc. and Botanical Laboratories Inc., are said to have agreed to pay around $15.5 million to settle the lawsuit.

For his part, Smith reportedly received around $10,000.

The defendants denied that Zicam is unsafe or that it causes anosmia.

Anosmia not only affects a patient's quality of life, it can be a safety issue. People rely on their sense of smell to warn them about fire, gas leaks and rotten food. The sense of smell is important to a person's ability to detect danger.

In Nov. and Dec. 2016 I began using Zicam nasal swabs. I proceeded in having a sinus infection. Shortly afterward, I noticed that my smell and taste had been affected. I had what the ENT described as a distorted smell/taste. Everything smelled awful and therefore tasted awful. I've lost 30 pounds because I can no longer enjoy food. I had a CT scan followed in July 2017 by nasal surgery. My condition has not been improved. I wish that I had researched this product before I used it. I have been telling everyone not to use this product. It is definitely not safe and has taken away my safety in smelling smoke, gas, etc. and it has taken away my quality of life by eliminating the pleasure of eating.

My comments are the same as all the above. Took Zicam in March of 2017 for bronchitis and nasal congestion. Proceeded shortly after to get metallic taste in mouth and lost both taste and smell. Went to ENT and verified the medical terms but could offer no solution. My doctor claimed it was the result perhaps of the virus and would return. Its August 2017 and I've lost 8 lbs (and I only weighed 124) because I have no desire to eat what I can't taste. Is there any kind of class action lawsuit currently going on? HELP!

I used Zicam nasal many years ago for a severe cold and like others never put 2 and 2 together until doing some research into my loss of smell recently. Wish I would have known about the lawsuit earlier they need to know how many people have been affected by this! My life certainly has changed, had to have a fire alarm (not just a smoke detector, that may be too late) in the house and always will for safety, taste is not the same and like another post have a weird taste often.

I used Zicam once several years ago while suffering from a head cold. Fast forward - I have lost my sense of smell and my sense of taste has slowly diminished. I suffer from chronic sinusitis and have a constant phantom smell of cigarette smoke.

I lost my sense of smell shortly after using Zicam but never put the two together until reading this article. I had no idea there was a lawsuit regarding the use of it.

I used Zicam swabs Dec. 2-4 I think it was and it worked great for getting rid of my cold quick. I haven't been able to smell since.... I can now just barely smell some things if I try real hard, like coffee beens etc.. with heavy heavy inhales .. 2 months later! I need my sense of smell for work! and life enjoyment, and survival :-(

About the 5th of January 2017 I tried Zicam swabs at the onset have a cold. I use the swabs as directed for approximately five days. Around the 10th of January I felt a burning sensation in my nasal cavity. I also noticed at that time I could no longer or smell anything. I stopped taking the Zicam at that time because of the burning sensation but that my my inability to smell anything was due to the cold. Yesterday Friday the 13th my cold begin to subside however notice they still could not smell or taste anything. Today is Saturday the 14th and there is no change. I did some research on the internet and was saddened to see that the symptoms I have are the same as all those that I just read about. I cannot believe this product is still on the market after reading these injuries Debian from what I can read as early is 2006. I am so maddened by this that I will do whatever I can to join in with anyone to be sure this product is taken off the market at the earliest possible time to avoid further injury to anyone else.

I was given Zicam by my doctor for a stuffy nose. He took it off a shelf in his drug closet and said use this as directed. This was early 2010, I used the spray once and it burned so bad I threw it away. Within 12 hours I noticed I couldn't smell or taste what I was eating. I have been to a neurologist 3 times, attended 8 months so far at a taste and smell clinic in Washington DC, 2 ENT's had 2 CAT scans, and an MRI. All the doctors I have been seeing for the past 6+ years have tried desperately to help me regain my 2 senses. Unfortunately it is not getting any better. It is amazing how this product has ruined tasting and enjoying food and not being able to smell a fresh cut rose or Christmas tree. This company should be accountable for this.

I used Zicam for a few years. I felt the burning but did not realize it was a permanent loss of smell that would follow. Since loosing my sense of smell I no longer enjoy many things and I have left the gas on the stove and completely burned a set of brakes on my vehicle among other things.

Several years ago, i used zicam spray, thinking i had a cold. The spray felt like it was burning the inside of my nose. Weeks later i noticed that when my wife was cooking meat, it smelled rancid! This has progressed into losing my sense of smell almost completely.

I used a Zicam swab once when I feared I might be getting a cold about 8 years ago. I've lost my sense. I'm so sad about this because I used to have such a keen sense of smell. I too would like to know if a lawsuit is still possible.

I used Zicam nasal swabs for years and stopped in 2012 because my sense of smell had diminished tremendously. It's 2016 and it still hasn't returned. Is it too late to sue?

Same as John Dewett, I used Zicam prior 2012 only once, felt something burning and lost my sense of smell, in turn no taste. To this day I do not have my entire sense of smell or taste back and I too still have the bottle I used.

I used the Zicam swab for several years about 6/7 years ago, and know I have no taste/ and smell. I live on the west coast and did not see anything regarding these suits that have been filed.
