A plane crash has taken the lives of three people and three horses in northern Los Angeles County late Thursday. The Cirrus SR-22 went down next to a barn about a mile west of the local airport while en route from Van Nuys to Parker, Ariz.

An FAA spokesman said that two people were killed in the plane, which caught fire after crashing. It was unknown where the other victim was when the crash occurred. Los Angeles County coroner's officials said two of the horses were killed by flying debris and a third had to be euthanized because of its injuries. A fourth horse was hurt but is expected to survive.

A nearby resident told KCAL-TV he was inside his house when he heard a big explosion, then ran to the crash site The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.
