Essure Associated with Serious Complications

. By Jane Mundy

“I want Essure taken off the market. I don’t want anyone to go through the agony that I did,” says Kelly, who wants her story to serve as a warning to others.

“I hope this will prevent other women from getting this Essure procedure - it has been, and still is, a nightmare.”
Just one month after Kelly, age 28, had the procedure, she had nasty cramps and sharp, stabbing pains in her pelvic area. And right after surgery she had severe bloating that she has lived with every day since the Essure device was implanted back in 2012.

“My gynecologist sold me on this device,” Kelly explains. “I have a daughter and son and neither my partner nor I wanted any more children. I didn’t want to have my tubes tied and my doctor told me these coils were safe. How wrong she was...”

Kelly complained to her gynecologist about the pain and other symptoms but her doctor said it couldn’t be associated with the Essure. She had blood and urine tests, an x-ray and ultrasound, but nothing showed up.

“Just a few months ago she finally listened to me and is now confident that Essure is causing all my problems,” says Kelly. Those problems include irregular periods; a discharge every day; hot flashes and night sweats; and itching, burning and stinging pains in her upper thighs, arms and face. “Every day I have a headache and sometimes it is so bad that I can’t go to work. I get a ringing in my ears and it’s like my brain is in a fog. As for the bloating, I was told right after my surgery that it would go away. It has never gone away.”

Because she missed so much time off work combined with problems concentrating (she works in accounting), Kelly is on her fourth job since getting the Essure. “I have been so sick and fatigued that sometimes I can’t even get out of bed,” Kelly says. “Since 2012, I’ve had to leave three jobs before they fired me.”

Kelly’s gynecologist has now apologized and referred Kelly to a specialist who is experienced in removing the Essure coils, but it’s no guarantee that everything will be okay. She doesn’t know how much damage has been done.

“My gynecologist gave me two options; If this specialist cannot remove the Essure, I would need a full hysterectomy and that threw me into a huge depression,” Kelly says.

“I always thought these coils could be removed at some future date if I changed my mind. I feel horrible that I didn’t do more research. Had I known how difficult it is to remove, and about even one of these side effects, I would have simply taken the pill. If my doctor even told me about the risks, I wouldn’t have chosen Essure. As for the manufacturer, I am furious, not only for myself but for other women and their partners. It is really sickening that this device was even approved. Essure scares me and I want it out.”
