Services and Repairs

Orange County, CA: (Dec-31-07) California state authorities brought charges against EZ Lube Inc., alleging that the Santa Ana-based firm which operates approximately 80 car repair shops in Southern California, duped motorists into paying for unneeded or unfinished repairs. Sources stated an investigation revealed that EZ Lube employees repeatedly told customers that their vehicles needed service they didn't need, or charged them for services never rendered. Company spokespersons denied the allegations.

As part of a settlement reached, EZ Lube agreed to pay $5 million to end allegations as well as install surveillance cameras to let customers watch their vehicles be serviced. Additionally, the facility, which has 14 outlets in Orange County, is being placed on probation by the state for five years, and ordered to suspend services other than oil and filter changes and chassis lubrications at 30 of its shops. Sources stated that Orange County Superior Court Judge David McEachern signed off on the $5 million settlement, which stemmed from a 2004 investigation by the state's consumer agency that investigates complaints against automobile repair shops.
