Money Mismanagement
Minneapolis, MN: (Dec-27-07) A group of Twin Cities dentists brought charges against American Dental Partners, a Massachusetts health care company, alleging that the company, brought in to handle the administrative side of the business in 1996, overstepped its bounds with a number of moves, starting in 2004. Over 115 dentists claimed that the company mismanaged financial accounts and denied the dentists access to their own money. The suit further alleged American Dental Partners began to interfere with the delivery of dental care by interfering in scheduling and demanding that it handle all patient complaints.
As part of a settlement reached, a verdict was announced, awarding the dentists a $130.6 million award. Sources close to the case stated that instead of the monetary award, the dentists decided to take the keys to their clinics. The settlement would then mean that 115 dentists will get 25 of the 31 Park Dental and Dental Specialist clinics. In making this move, they avoided the prospect of years of appeals by American Dental Partners. In the court case, the dentists put the value of the clinics at $115 million. The real estate, equipment and supplies are owned or leased by American Dental Partners. Now the leases and deeds will be transferred to the dentists. [STAR TRIBUNE: DENTIST MONEY]
