Stolen Sand

San Francisco, CA: (Dec-10-07) California Attorney General Jerry Brown's office brought charges against Hanson Building Materials, alleging that the mining company stole sand from several bays near San Francisco. The lawsuit also accused the company of defrauding the state out of millions of dollars in royalty payments for sand mined in Suisun and San Francisco Bays. Sources claimed that the lawsuit was filed after a whistleblower reported that the company had defrauded the state out of millions of dollars in royalties by failing to fully report sand taken from sites acquired in 1999. The suit was filed in 2003. As part of a settlement reached, Hanson Building Materials agreed to pay $42.2 million to resolve allegations.
