High School Football

Stockton, CA: (Nov-14-07) The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Section's board of managers brought charges against the Stockton Unified School District, over Franklin High's football program. The charges stemmed from the two-week-old "death penalty" that suspended Franklin football through the 2009 season. In a settlement reached, sources stated that the Stockton Unified School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously during a closed meeting to accept a settlement negotiated between district officials and the California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section's board of managers, drastically reducing the suspension.

Under the terms of the deal, Franklin's football team will be allowed to take the field next year, but it will not be allowed to participate in the 2008 playoffs. That ban will be lifted in 2009. Further, the district agreed to pay up to $65,000 in legal fees and up to $98,000 in investigative costs to the CIF. Officials claimed that Stockton Unified would have to pay up to $100,000 if additional lawsuits arise from the recent conflict with the CIF over illegal football recruiting at Franklin High.
