Speech Defamation

Galveston, TX: (Nov-07-07) Anthony Buzbee, a prominent island attorney, brought a lawsuit against Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, the nation's largest dredging contractors, alleging that the company recorded and disseminated a speech he gave in 2006 in Las Vegas. The suit stated that Buzbee gave a speech to a group of maritime defense attorneys in Las Vegas. One of them recorded the speech, in which Buzbee reportedly voiced a preference for filing worker-injury cases in Starr County in Rio Grande Valley whenever possible. Buzbee alleged that Pro-business group Texas for Lawsuit Reform circulated the transcript of the speech, which Buzbee said was taken out of context, but which they said proved the tort system was flawed.

As part of a settlement reached, Great Lakes agreed to a payout, the details of which weren't made public. Buzbee stated The Jesse Tree, a faith-based organization that works to reduce poverty and hunger, would receive $50,000 in the agreement. The settlement resolved the lawsuit in which Buzbee claimed he was portrayed as an attorney who shopped for biased judges and juries. [SPEECH DEFAMATION]
