Off-Island Waste

Nantucket, MA: (Nov-05-07) Waste Options, a landfill operator, brought charges against the town, alleging that it breached its contract with the company. The dispute stemmed from off-island shipping of construction and demolition waste. As part of a settlement reached, town administrator Libby Gibson stated that Nantucket will pay Waste Options $761,317 to cover costs associated with the off-island shipping of construction and demolition waste and a rebate of a portion of the volume discount for waste processed by the company.

Records show that in November 2006, the American Arbitration Association ruled in favor of Waste Options, and ordered the town to pay the Rhode Island company just under $1.2 million for expenses related to the off-island shipping of construction and demolition waste, the state regulatory approval to distribute compost at the landfill, and the construction of a new lined cell. The recent settlement was the result of the town's appeal of the earlier announced $1.2 million settlement. [INQUIRER AND MIRROR: OFF ISLAND WASTE]
