Jackson, MO: (Sep-04-07) A group of municipalities in Missouri brought a lawsuit against Verizon Wireless, charging that a tax should be levied on mobile phone companies that was traditionally charged to fixed-line operators. Five other mobile phone companies face the same charges in the case, which was launched in 2001. In a settlement reached, Verizon Wireless, which is a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC agreed to pay $30 million to resolve litigation. Verizon Wireless is the first to settle the case in which 23 municipalities have sought to levy the tax.
