Verizon Wireless

Jackson, MO: (Sep-04-07) A group of municipalities in Missouri brought a lawsuit against Verizon Wireless, charging that a tax should be levied on mobile phone companies that was traditionally charged to fixed-line operators. Five other mobile phone companies face the same charges in the case, which was launched in 2001. In a settlement reached, Verizon Wireless, which is a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC agreed to pay $30 million to resolve litigation. Verizon Wireless is the first to settle the case in which 23 municipalities have sought to levy the tax. Further, as part of the settlement agreement, Verizon agreed to pay two years' back taxes and lawyers' fees. [FORBES: MOBILE PHONE TAX]
