Pittsburgh Brewing

Pittsburgh, PA: (Apr-27-07) The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority filed charges against Pittsburgh Brewing, which led the Lawrenceville brewery to file for bankruptcy in December 2005. The suit alleged that the brewery owed the agency over $2.6 million in unpaid bills. The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority threatened to terminate services leading to the bankruptcy move. The brewery disputed the claim, particularly how the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority calculates the sewage portion of the bill. When customers fail to pay Alcosan, the water and sewer authority, reimburses Alcosan and goes after the delinquent accounts, which it did in the case of the brewery. In a recent settlement, the agency agreed to drop charges for a minimum of about $575,000, or 22 cents on the dollar based on its $2.6 million claim. It could get up to another $1 million if the brewery's new owners fail to live up to commitments to make improvements at the Liberty Avenue plant. [POST GAZETTE: WATER BILL]
