San Francisco, CAA group of domestic workers, employers and families recently rallied at the Women's Building in San Francisco to support a new Domestic Worker's Bill of Rights, which would cover the employees under California overtime law, among other things.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, California assembly member Tom Ammiano first introduced the legislation last month. In addition to overtime pay, domestic workers such as housekeepers and caregivers would potentially receive overtime pay and paid vacation and breaks, regardless of their immigration statuses.
The news source reports that domestic workers generally have not been part of many labor laws in the state, citing California's Occupational Safety & Heath Act, which does not cover them. If the latest legislation is passed, it would be the second such action taken in the country, as New York approved a similar bill last August.
The new legislation would also reportedly give domestic workers advance termination notice, which they currently are not entitled to, according to the news provider.
