Domestic Workers Bill Includes Provisions for California Overtime Pay

Domestic workers in the Golden State may soon receive positive adjustments to their California overtime pay, as the state's Assembly is scheduled to vote on the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights.

The legislation, which would grant domestic workers equal overtime pay and other protections, was approved last month by the state Senate, according to the Golden Gate XPress.

In addition to California overtime pay, the bill would extend equal rights to worker's compensation and require that domestic workers be given at least five hours of uninterrupted sleep.

"It's a struggle for human rights and human dignity," said Andrea Cristina Mercado, lead organizer of Mujeres Unidas y Activas, an organization that promotes social justice. "These workers have been in the dark."

Mercado said that it is not only important to educate workers about their rights, but to inform employers of them as well.

"A law can be on the books but workers won't know about it," she told the news source. "That's why employer education is important so that they know the law."

New York enacted similar legislation on August 31.
