Coumadin

Coumadin Birth Defects Coumadin can be a very effective drug in preventing life-threatening events in patients who have Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) or Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib). However, Coumadin (known generically as Warfarin) is also one of the most complex drugs to use safely because it can interact with a variety of foods and medications.

Physicians need to carefully examine the medical history of patients who are candidates for this drug, and also verify that the patient is not using one of the 100 other prescription medications that are known to have dangerous interactions with Coumadin.

In addition, a number of over-the-counter drugs and herbals also have dangerous interactions with Coumadin. Genetic markers are available to determine which patients are at greater risk for Coumadin adverse reactions and serious Coumadin injury.

Coumadin Birth Defects

DESCRIPTIVE TEXTUse of Coumadin during pregnancy or risk of pregnancy is very important to avoid, since Coumadin causes a very characteristic set of birth defects, marked by bone hypoplasias (resulting for instance in "pug nose") and brain damage resulting in mental retardation.

The medication guide for Coumadin warns that women who are pregnant, or planning on becoming pregnant, should not take Coumadin. Those who take Coumadin and could become pregnant are advised to use effective birth control because Coumadin can cause death or birth defects to an unborn baby.

Meanwhile, women who are breast-feeding are warned that Coumadin may increase bleeding in the baby.

Coumadin Side Effects

Physicians need to warn their patients to report immediately if they experience any of a series of Coumadin side effect symptoms that typically precede more serious adverse reactions: Unusual bleeding or bruising; black or bloody stools; blood in the urine; tiredness; unexplained fever; chills; sore throat; stomach pain.

Other serious Coumadin side effects include death of skin tissue (signified by pain, color or temperature change to any area of the body), "purple toes syndrome," allergic reactions, liver problems and low blood pressure.

The worst scenarios for Coumadin injuries involve hemorrhagic stroke or aneurysm—both involving blood vessels that burst in the brain and fail to be self-limiting due to the drug's blocking of normal clotting that otherwise would stop the bleeding.

Coumadin Medical Malpractice

Patients on Coumadin require regular blood monitoring to ensure their blood stays within proper therapeutic levels. Blood that moves out of those levels can indicate a lack of ability to clot, possibly resulting in serious harm from otherwise minor cuts. Failure of medical professionals to provide adequate monitoring could constitute medical malpractice on the part of the medical professional.

It can easily be said that the pressure on Coumadin (warfarin) has been off ever since the two newer blood thinners Pradaxa and Xarelto have been on the market and commanding headlines with their inherent lack of antidotes (although a reversing agent for Pradaxa is currently in the pipeline for FDA approval). Is Coumadin on the Way Out?
Is Coumadin on the Way Out?
May 10, 2015
Because it has been around for so many years, Coumadin was widely regarded as the gold standard for anticoagulant medications. New medications have come along to replace Coumadin, claiming to not carry the same risk of Coumadin side effects - or the same need for blood monitoring. But because Coumadin (known also as warfarin) has an antidote, it has survived competition from the newer drugs. READ MORE

About 3 years my dad died from Calciphylaxis. At the time of his death he had Calciphylaxis and was on Warfarin a common blood thinner which I believe recently has been recalled.  Some have called it the most dangerous drug in America.
They have now determined that Warfarin has a direct correlation to Calciphylaxis.  So now in all the medical books they say that Caciphylaxis is a side effect of Warfarin.  Three years ago they thought and probably new it was the main cause.  So why did they not issue a warning then?  Now they have done many case studies on this.
I asked them to get him off Warfarin when we first found out about it.  Well the doctors never did.  How is the possible.  I was able to see that being on Warfarin could be the cause but the Doctors didn't understand.   I’m the one that had to make the Doctors get him off Warfarin and on Eliquis.  My Dad was dying of this disease.  However he had been on Warfarin months before he was diagnosed with Calciphylaxis.
The Doctors seemed to blame it on circulation and other things.  However it was probably the sepsis that was caused by the Caciphylaxis that killed him.
I remember my Dad going into the hospital walking and coming out in a bed and not being able to move.  Then I saw all those rips, and bruises on his backside and the bleeding. This was during Covid and we were only allowed in during certain hours. The nurses did not turn him for weeks. I just believe in my heart that the Doctors and nurses failed Him in that regard.

Simple case. I HAD MY COUMALDIN DOSE INCREASED AFTER I begged them not too. Three days later horrible ulcers erupted on my left leg. I was bullied into taking a higher dose. After my leg developed severe ulcers. I was expelled from the Clinic with no explanation why. Several trips to hospitals and rehabs and self care at home a year later the head surgeon declared my leg non healable and took my left leg off. These people are still pushing higher doses of Coumadin. I wrapped my leg every day for a year to no avail. Was never given any effective medication or treatment to help me save my left leg below the knee. I asked several of my physicians why I lost my leg. I received no answer and was ignored.

Hello,
I've been trying to find someone to help me since my Mother passed 11/20/2017 with no luck. I'm hoping you can fulfill the only wish of hers that I wasn't able to. She passed away from an allergic reaction to Warfarin. It caused her to lose 50 lbs, have sores in her mouth, to where she couldn't eat, and she lost the ability to walk. She brought these up to her primary care physician who kept her coming back for a shot of some sort. Finally she took herself off of the Warfarin, but the damage was already done. She had AFIB as a result as well. She was in a rehab facility to help her walk after the hospital released her, and was sent to the ER for low oxygen level. Being her power of attorney, It was my decision to take her off life support. I still have her prescription bottles with the pills in them minus what she took.
Please, please, help me. :-(

I was on Coumadin for 25 years. I hated it. There were so many side effects. The last few years I have been off it because a Dr. in SC told me I didn’t need it.
Then after reading more about then blood disorder I was told I had, I realized they made a mistake and I did not have Factor V Leiden but was a carrier.
No one else in my family tested positive for it.
I suffered long and needlessly due to the incompetence of the hospital hematologist that sent me a letter and told me I tested positive for the disorder and that I would have to take the medicine for the rest of my life.
I plan on seeking compensation for all the pain and suffered by being on rat killer poison for 25 years.
I would love to have an attorney versed in such a lawsuit call me.

My mom was on Warfarin for a couple years with no problems related to it. She was ongoing dialysis and then one day her legs started hurting and she developed ulcers and her skin was dying she was unable to walk and go to dialysis. The doctors ignored her cries for help and didn't give her a diagnosis and just sent her home. She died last month at 47 years old.

Levels needed I ended up needing so much anything I bumped caused massive bruising. I had other Ned interactions and could not lead s normal life due to having to make sure I stopped a day ahead or sometimes more. It was a nightmare.

February 21, 2012 my Mother passed away. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in started chemotherapy in summer of 2011. We got a call that December 2011 that her cancer was in remission, but find out the pain in her right leg was DVT and was pleased on Coumadin. My Mother also was a diabetic receiving at one point Medformin and insulin at night, but with the diet and exercise I was able to help my mother with, her Doctor took her off the insulin at night. This was before using Coumadin. Once on Coumadin, everything became a disaster and my life and her life ended. She was put back on insulin because Dr. Could not regulate her sugar. She also bumped her head and not knowing that a bumped didn’t have to hurt to cause bleeding, my mother went into a coma while in her sleep and passed 3 days after.

I have been reading about all these people having problems with the coumadin. I have been on coumadin around 10 yrs for A Fib. I take 5 mg.5 days and 2.5 mg on Mon. & Fri. My cardiologist was able to get me a machine to take my INR readings at home. I do this every 2 weeks. Iam careful as to how much Vit K I consume, drink no alcohol,no INSAIDS and my INR stays in check. Had no problems with it. It's scary knowing people can have such a severe reaction while taking it. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Does anyone have anything good to say about this drug?

In 2006 a scar ofrom pe in 1985 was seen in a ct and I was never follwed up on til diagnosis discreinsies 7 tears later. Was even treated second time in hospital and had dosage increased. At one point a doctor put me on vitamin k and coumadin. When I finally got to see a hematologist to undiagnose my anti thrombin iii, he held 4 cts up and said it was a scar. I went off coumadin and have not been followed up on at all. This has been a nightmare for which significant life changes transpired that are irrepable. I am disabled with complex ptsd and have been worse than ever since. I have lost much weight, depression, and fear doctors now. Not only did they do that but then delayed testing and interfered with undiagnosis.

My father had open heart surgery, he was then put on cumadin! He did alright for a while but then I received a call from my mother saying that my father had fallen because the right side of his body went numb and he could move either his arm or leg! He then started to have a very intense head ache and started to slur his words. The paramedics came and even after we had repeatedly told them to take him to a different hospital they still took him to a hospital that wasn't able to help him correctly! When he got to the hospital the doctors put him on more Coumadin until we reached the hospital (me his son, his wife, and more family members) after we had told him he had been takin Coumadin for a while now, the doctors reversed the Coumadin they had already given him, they then called for an air ambulance (which to me wouldn't be smart because of the change in altitude so quickly would make the blood pressure increase which would cause more damage) later after the air ambulance got to their destination of a hospital that was actually qualified to help him with his case it was already to late and the brain had shifted to much and they doctors gave my father a 2% survival rating? It is still very hard to cope with but I just would like someone to tell me if I'm wrong in thinking the paramedics are at fault for not listening to me and my family members and also if that under rated hospital is to be held accountable?

I was diagnosed with a DVT in my right calf in December 2009. I was put on coumadin. 10 months later in September 2010, I went to the ER with a headache that wouldn't go away after 3weeks. I was told I had a brain bleed...a subdural hematoma. I spent over a week in the hospital while they tried to get my INR therapeutic so that they could do surgery to remove the clot that had formed from the excessive bleeding. I was repeatedly told that they couldn't believe this didnt kill me. I feel like it did kill me. My entire life has changed now and I still have many problems as a result of these issues. I was never involved in any kind of accident or had any kind of trauma to my head to instigate a bleed. I stopped taking the coumadin about 6 months after my burr hole surgery, as I believe I was either overdose on coumadin, or my "routine" INR readings were incorrect. Please, I need answers!?!?!?!

I had a heart valve done in Jan. 2014. I have had internal bleeding so bad that it hospitalized me too. I had 6 units of blood. The last time I also had to have potassium. Both times I have spent a week or longer in the hospital. I have been told that the Coumadin does NOT like my intestines. Then the other day my heart Doc. tells me that they should not have given me the maniacal value because I have some intestine problems before the value was replaced, and they should have checked further before putting this value in, they should have done the pig value and I would not be on Warfarin today. I see a lot of you are on 5 mg of Warfarin, I take 12 mgs. and makes me wonder what I am headed for. I'm tired too all of the time, bruising that doesn't go away, discoloration of my feet and legs, so painful too. Should I get a lawyer?

My father is in the hospital as I write this he had a brain bleed that could not be attended to until the Coumadin levels in his blood were lowered this took 2 days along with intravenous clotting drugs. He finally had the surgery to drain the blood and 2 days later had another bleed in another part of his brain. They were finally able to stop the bleeding and he is still in ICU getting repeated CT scans to make sure the bleeding doesn't start again. We will not know what damage has been done until he tries to get up and walk. We would like to be part of this lawsuit for sure, what a horrible drug.

My brother was on warfarin, plavix, and a low dose aspirin. He was diagnosed by the VA of having heart problems. They had put 3 stints in and we were waiting for them to try again to get the 100% blockage fixed. He was completely reliable on a wheelchair. My brother was staying with our sister and on occasions would stay with me. One night he happened to be with me. I had been gone all day babysitting. When I came home I checked on him and he was asleep in the recliner. A little while later my husband and I hear a noise. We go to the den and my brother apparently was trying to get up and fell. My husband helped him turn over and asked him what happened. He said he didn't know and seemed to not know where he was. Ambulance was called and took him to a local hospital because the VA hospital is an hour or so away. I told them his medical history and my brother was also able to help some. They ran tests and did a scan where they found bleeding in his brain. They had to get all the blood thinners out of his system and give him medication to help his blood clot before they could go in and drain the blood. The procedure was done and after a a day or so he started waking up really good and was moved from ICU to another room on a different floor. We explained to him what happened. He did not remember it. He knew mine and my sister's names but put it to the wrong person. The next day he got our names right but was a little child like. The doctors put him back on the warfarin during this time. Things got a little better as the week progressed. He was still a little child like but knew us all and carried on conversations and laughed with us. My husband and I visited him on Sunday everything was good, eating good, good conversation, laughing and he wanted a coke. He was tired of water, so a coke he got. We left with everything looking good and him laughing. The very next day I go and he will not open his eyes. He squeezes my hand to let me know he can hear me. I feed him his breakfast and had to tell him to open his mouth and then to chew. To give home a drink I had to put the straw in his mouth and then tell him to take a drink. One nurse assures me he is fine. I think well maybe all the previous week just caught up with him and he's tired. I continue to talk to him that day and he is nodding his head or squeezing my hand. I leave that night. The next day he's not responding at all. We demand for the doctor to come in. The doctor says he needs to be put back in ICU. This was late that night. The next day they had run test and ordered a scan. We spent all day there. The next morning I got a call early saying he was having problems breathing and ask if I wanted them to intabate, I said yes and I'm on my way there. Got there and they had just got him all hooked up on a breathing machine. Finally they do a scan and find more bleeding on his brain so they drain it. Got him back to his room and were closely watching some numbers (?). Those numbers did get to where they wanted them so another scan. It shows more blood already and no brain activity. We had no choice but to let him go.I have had this gut feeling that the VA doctors had him on too much blood thinners.

I was on coumadin for cerebral venous sinus thrombosis - a blood clot in the brain. It's been said that the medication may have caused scarring of my brain tissue which remains even though the clot is gone. While on the medication I experiences many side effects but the most severe being extreme fatigue, feeling a heavy weight on my chest which I thought was difficulty breathing or possibly not getting enough blood to my head due to the clot. It's about a year later and I recently found out that I have an issue with my heart. I have had abnormal EKGs and will have a series of tests done by a cardiologist. There is no history of this in my family, nor do I have lifestyle factors that could have caused this. It appears I have permanent damage from taking this power poison of a drug that went from helping me to nearly killing me. Due to the severity fof the symptoms I experienced while on coumadin, I have zero doubt that the injury to my heart was caused by anything other than this drug.

I lost my husband one year ago, he was put on Coumadin and when he came home from hospital he said I cannot see.
He started acting very odd and doing strange things. He actually acted mentally impaired. It was so bad I had to move from Georgia to Tulsa where my daughter lived for support. Finally after many episodes we got to a doctor who figured it out. A brain surgeon said, it was bleeding of the brain. He gave him 70% chance of survival.
He was only 72,which to a young person sounds elderly.
His hands and arms had turned black.
He survived the brain surgery but health continued to decline.
Unfortunately he passed away 10-15. I have the x rays in my possession . Nothing can replace him but if there is some thing you can do for me would be highly appreciated. My father bought warfarin to kill rats when I was small, I know what it can do. He was at home with me when he passed, I went back into the room and his lips and tongue had turned black within a few minutes.

In March of 2009 I was hospitalized for two blood clots one in each lung, and then later that same year one deep vein thrombosis from the left leg. I was put on Warfarin and tested for the factor 5 gene. My doctor said I had it and that I would be on warfarin for the rest of my life with a life of weekly, sometimes more than once; or monthly testing. My levels from March 2009 to December of 2013 were rarely in therapeutic range. My body threw blood clots even while on it. I fell in the tub and had two more in pelvis. And then while on premron for a short time until I noticed contradindications; I had a large one in 2013 I could hold in my hand. I described to the doctor as 2 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches thick came out. Plus it looked like I was hemmoraging. Finially in 2014 I made the choice to go off. And though I can still feel the effects of what Warfarin has done to me through my blood, energy levels; digestive tract, lungs;respitory tract; I now live with a continuous low grade fever for continous bladder infections.

After having mitral valve replacement, I was put on Coumadin.I was released after 5 days to go home and told to follow up with my family doctor the following week. Following my cardiologist's instructions, I went to my family doctor. He immediately stated that I was bleeding out with a blood pressure and INR reading that couldn't even be measured because bp was so low and INR was so high! I was airlifted back to my cardiologist, who was concerned because besides the bleeding, I was on the verge of renal failure. Then even with taking Coumadin, I developed a blood clot on my new mitral valve. They busted the clot which resulted in DVT in my right leg. The muscle was removed along with the clot. After 6 months of appts, with plastic surgeon, I was released. I will always have a disfiguring 12 inch scar and walk with a limp. The resulting limp cause back pain. I'm always extremely fatigued and depressed because I am now worse off than I was before all this started. I feel that the majority of my above problems is due to Coumadin.

The doctors suggested having a filter put in . I was so scared and thought I was going to die, cause they couldn't get the bleeding to stop ,that I agreed to the filter being put in. I started taking Coumadin/warfarin in 1998 because I was diagnosed with factor V Leiden Mutation at the age of 25. I continued taking it until 2015 when I suffered from repeated fractures in my foot. My doctor completed a bone density scan and determined that my bones were borderline osteopenia (42 years old!). My vitamin D was also very low (osteomalacia). I stopped taking Coumadin/warfarin at that point and began taking xarelto and 50,000 units of vitamin D. My levels slowly came back up and I was able to start physical activity again.

in preparation for a caratoid artery angioplasty which is yet to be done i was put on warfarin in combo with aspirin...after about a month i experienced abdominal bleed which was treated by GI and attributed to the warfarin/aspirin .i was given transfusions to replace the lost blood and spent several nights in hspital, i was cleared by GI and the problem seems to be resolved. in prep for the angioplasty they will put me on plavix instead. i experienced alot of weakness and had to stay in rest for about a month after the experience.

I would like to know about the lawsuit as well.

My mother was on Coumadin for many years and developed Dementia. She was also fatigued, a bit depressed, developed horrible bruises from the slightest of bumps, had headaches, stomach pain, etc.

We placed her in a Care Center when we could no longer handle her care at home due to the dementia. She was there 18 days before she suffered blunt force trauma to the head but was kept there for 16 hours before transported to the hospital with a Coumadin level of 5.2. She had 3 brain bleeds that vitamin K could not stop. She died 7 days later.

I take Warfarin because I had to have a heart valve and conduit replaced due to Marfan Syndrome. Over the time that I have been taking the drug I have had several instances where I would either blow my nose or I would sneeze and my nose would start to bleed profusely. When U would go to the Emergency Room or to the doctor's office they would put an ice pack on it or hold pressure on it and then finally they would pack it full of gauze or put foam wedges in there to stop the bleeding. All this did was to force the blood to go down the back of my throat causing me to eventually.become nausias and throw up what looked like clotted blood. This has happened several times over the period that I have beentaking Warfarin and I am told that I must remain on this medication for the rest of my life due to the replacing of my heart valve with a titanium heart valve. I am thankful that the doctors were able to repair my heart but I do wonder sometimes if.I could get one of these nose.bleeds and not.be able yo make it to a hospital or the doctors office in time. Please let.me know if. I have any legal right to compensation due to the multiple times that this happened. It may be difficult but if needed I believe the doctor's offices and the 4 hospitals that I have had to go yo over the years should have records of my Emergency Room visits. Please let me know if you feel that there is any recourse for us in this matter. Thank you for taking the time to read my email and I look forward to receiving your reply.

My father died of a hemorrhagic stroke after being on warfarin for over 2 years. He lost feeling in his right arm and leg, then lost the ability to speak clearly within minutes, then became lethargic and vomited in the ambulance. He was unresponsive in the hospital. Bleeding increased overnight. He died 3 days later without ever regaining any neurological response.

My mother was given Warfarin prior to a knee-replacement surgery in 2014. She suffered end a seizure in pre-op so the surgery never happened. Her health declined after that episode,,as she was kept on anti-seizure medicine in addition to Warfarin. Earlier this year, she went to the hospital complaining of difficulty breathing, and was diagnosed with walking pneumonia and given antibiotics. After no change in condition for weeks, she continued going back to the hospital until a doctor finally realized the had blood clots in her lungs due to DVT. Her dosage of Warfarin was increased and she was placed on oxygen. Two days after Thanksgiving, my mom complained of a severe headache and by the time the ambulance arrived she was in a coma and subsequently suffered brain death. The use of the blood thinner cause a 7 hour fatal brain hemorrhage and we lost our mom.

After knee surgery they found a blood clot and put me on Coumadin my pcp told me I was to be on it for 6 months. I felt fatigued and tired all the time! My chest hurt with horrible pressure ! They then found a blood clot in my lung so I had to continue the Coumadin for another 6 months all though I had continued chest pressure and pain they checked for another blood clot in my lung and found none. After being hospitalized a few times for the chest pain my cardiologist came in and told me to stop the Coumadin right away! I asked why and he told me it's poison and suspected it to be the reason for all my chest pain. I stopped it and felt better with in a few weeks ! I still get horrible chest pain that they called pericarditis or Costochondritis ! I know this was caused from Coumadin . The new protocol for being in Coumadin when you know where the blood clot source is from is 3 months ! My pcp had me on it for 6 then an additional 6 for blood clot in my lung ! All the other doctors thought that was weird because of new protocol ! They said he is an old school doctor ! I also could not do my job as law enforcement because I could not work being on Coumadin ! This drug ruined my life and still causes me horrible chest pain 2 years later !

I was put on warfarin in 2005. I took it for 6 months and stayed sick all the time. I went to see a gastrointologist and had numerous tests done to see why I was staying sick. This was after I quit taking it. I had a ultrasound, endoscopy, & a c t scan. My doctor determined I had Barretts esophagus. To this day now 2015 I stay sick a lot.My energy level is shot. My feet stay cold & is very painful to stand. It is very upsetting! My throat is raw all the time, milk is what helps me a lot.

The doctor gave me warfarin after a surgery but did not tell me regardless the warning of the hospital. 3 month later I suffered a heard attack and my heard stop' beating. Wondering if warfarin had a part to be blamed for that?

I had been using warfarin for a time and still had a stroke. But before I left the hospital the Dr.came to me and told me something very strange. He took me to the side and said, if I were you l would quit taking that blood thinner.l always thought the medicine prevented strokes. I am curious if this has happened to anyone else.

My husband was given coumadin warfarin and 2007/2008/2009 and 2010 through 12 4 after heart surgery in 2009 he went into the hospital for 60 days for internal bleeding kidney failure and respiratory distress he was later admitted to the nursing facility which he stayed for a period of time. Because of the stress of his hospitalization Exedra it began to affect his temperament he became very aggressive and hallucinogenic because he thought that he was dying and so did the doctors. This supplic subsequently led to our separation because of the impact his illness had on our relationship and finances. We were separated for 5 years of the time of his recovery he has never fully recovered. I feel that due to the stress and the illness and the impact of the internal bleeding hospitalization and the impact of his illness ill affected our marriage and relationship as well as his help and mine emotional state. I would decide compensation for emotional trauma due to the impact of his illness.

Took 5 mgs of Warfarin for 23 days. I suffered constant headaches, nausea, and dizziness. The total and continuous discomfort caused me to become bedridden, rather than fainting to the floor. I quit taking the drug , and after two days, began to improve and am able to walk.

My mother was prescribed Coumadin for her irregular heartbeat. She did not have high blood pressure. She had been complaining to her doctor of headaches & flu-like symptoms. He continued her on the medication. At 11pm one night she was rushed to the emergency room suffering a severe headache & was in a coma by the time the ambulance arrived. She was pronounced brain dead a few hours later & passed away the next day. She had been to her doctors appointment a few days before this happened.

Was given coumadin and heparin to treat deep vein thrombosis. Shortly after being released from hospital on heparin, developed severe bruising to lower extremities resulting in skin necrosis. Had two surgeries to remove dead tissue, right leg included entire circumference of right leg below the knee and two large lesions on left leg. Had skin grafts to both lower legs with skin from front of thighs. As a result, I've been severely scarred. Unable to wear anything but pants, have constant edema, especially to right leg.
