UPDATE: Byetta Deaths Increase

Four New Deaths in Byetta Patients Who Developed Pancreatitis

Further to an FDA announcement last week of two fatalities connected to the type 2 diabetes drug Byetta, comes news of a further four drug-related deaths. These new fatalities are not connected to the four people hospitalized last week for pancreatitis.

Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lily & Company reported the additional deaths Tuesday. The causes of death have not yet been fully determined, however the patients had developed pancreatitis.

Byetta is an injected medication, used to improve blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes. It was approved in 2005, however, last week the FDA announced that it will be strengthening warnings about serious pancreatitis related to the use of the drug.
