Smokeless Tobacco Increases Risk of Stroke and Heart Attack

People who use smokeless tobacco products are at greater risk for fatal stroke and fatal myocardial infarction (MI) - or heart attack, according to a study published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) online this month.

Smokeless tobacco products include chewing tobacco and snuff. The use of these products had declined in the last half of the last century, however thier use has begun to increase as more people try to quit smoking.

The meta-analysis published by the BMJ evaluated data from 11 studies conducted in the United States and Sweden, with data from electronic databases and reference lists. While the study authors were not able to determine risk by sex, i.e. are men more at risk than women, they did warn that their findings could not be explained by chance, and therefore may have substantial public health ramifications.

Snuff is tobacco that is shredded or finely ground that a person can either sniff or place between their cheeks and gum. Chewing tobacco is essentially a wad of of tobacco placed inside the mouth – between the cheek and the gum.

The investigators suggest that smokeless tobacco may cause health problems through increased blood pressure and heart rate.

The findings from this study add to existing concerns about these products, specifically chewing tobacco, which, according to the National Cancer Institute, contains 28 known cancer causing agents.
