CDC Reports 79 People Sick So Far from Salmonella Infected Pet Food

Small Children Among the Ill

Further to a recall issued October 27 for Mars Petcare Special Kitty, Pedigree and Member's Mark pet food, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have announced today that 79 people are ill from coming into contact with the food, including many young children. Worse, many people may remain at risk as salmonella-tainted bags of pet food could still be in people's homes.

To date, no deaths have occurred, however people who handle the food are at risk of contracting the Salmonella enterica serotype known as Schwarzengrund.

The CDC report states "Consumers and health departments should be aware that all dry pet food, pet treats, and pet supplements might be contaminated with pathogens such as Salmonella, and consumers should use precautions with all brands of dry pet food, treats, and supplements." The CDC recommends keeping any dry pet food away from children.

On October 1, Mars announced that the plant that manufactured the food, in Everson Pennsylvania, will be closed permanently.
