Dirty Needles Prompt HIV, Hepatitis Testing in Alberta

Up to 2400 Patients Could be Affected

About 2,700 patients in northern Alberta received drugs via used needles, and could be infected with HIV or hepatitis. According to news reports, the practice of re-using needles has been going on in a northern Alberta hospital for the past 20 years. A handful of nurses are implicated in the scandal.

So far, 1,400 patients who underwent dental surgery as far back as 1990 need to be tested for HIV and hepatitis, as do an additional 1,300 patients who underwent endoscopy procedures.
