Severe Birth Defects Associated with Botox-Type Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

According to documents from the Federal Health and Ageing Department in Australia, released under that country's Freedom of Information, a "serious and unexpected pregnancy outcome" has been linked to the use of Dysport, an anti-wrinkle treatment very similar to Botox.

According to the Australian media, in 2005 an Australian woman who had undergone Dysport anti-wrinkle treatment during her first week of pregnancy gave birth to a baby who was deaf and blind. The birth defect is among 46 different adverse reactions reported to Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration since 1994. A 2006 report on the birth defect, from the medical services manager for the manufacturer of Dysport, states that there may be a 'possible' link with Dysport.

Dysport and Botox both contain botulinum toxin type A compounds. Dysport is approved in Australia for cosmetic treatments, but not in the US.

In the US, the FDA issued a public warning in February 2008 regarding a similar product, Myobloc, stating that it is associated with adverse reactions including respiratory failure and death.
