Environmental Violations

Las Angeles, CA: (Apr-17-08) California Attorney General Edmund "Jerry" Brown and other federal regulators brought charges against Pilot Travel Centers, alleging that the company's operation and maintenance of underground storage tanks and its handling of hazardous materials violated state regulations. Sources familiar with the negotiations said that the two sides reached a settlement agreement in September 2007, in which Pilot agreed to a $7.5 million fine. Court records reveal that $1 million portion of the $7.5 million fine was suspended, and the company was given a $1.5 million credit for voluntary actions related to its underground tanks.

Jimmy Haslam, Pilot Travel Centers CEO, announced that the company did have technical and administrative violations, but claimed that not a drop of gasoline or diesel fuel spilled at any of the properties that affected the waterways or the environment in the state. State officials contended that the case was not about contamination, but about compliance with laws designed to protect the environment. In a recent announcement, Pilot Travel Centers has decided it will no longer build travel center locations in CA following the settlement of the multi million-dollar lawsuit with CA regulators.
