EPA Violations

Bridgeport, CT: (Apr-14-08) The US Environmental Protection Agency brought charges against Motiva Enterprises, LLC, a subsidiary of Shell Oil, which functions as a gasoline bulk terminal, alleging that it had violations of the federal Clean Air Act. The terminal loads gasoline into tanker trucks, a process the suit claimed, generates significant gasoline vapors containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Records show that the gasoline vapors are controlled by two large vapor storage tanks and a carbon-bed vapor-recovery unit. The suit claimed that the facility's vapor storage tanks were improperly maintained and leaked VOC-containing vapors, which is a violation of the federal Clean Air Act. The suit was filed following a joint investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency and the state's Department of Environmental Protection, which revealed the violations.

As part of a settlement reached in the case, sources stated that Motiva Enterprises agreed to pay a $75,000 fine to resolve allegations. Additionally, it also agreed to decommission two vapor storage tanks, to avoid such incidences in the future. [CONNECTICUT BUSINESS NEWS JOURNAL: GASOLINE STORAGE FACILITY FINED]
