Storm Sewer System

Lexington, KY: (Feb-19-08) The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) brought a lawsuit against Lexington-Fayette County, alleging that the county had violations of the federal Clean Water Act. In response to the suit, Mayor Jim Newberry stated that the problems stem from a failure over the years to properly maintain the sewer systems. Sources close to the case said that a settlement has been reached, in which Lexington-Fayette County officials have approved paying a quarter of a billion dollars to fix sewer problems. Under the terms of agreement, Lexington will spend more than $250 million to fix its sanitary and storm sewer systems. The city also will pay a $425,000 fine, create a storm water fee and increase the sanitary sewer user fee for Lexington residents, resolving allegations.
