Wastewater Spills

Minster, OH: (Oct-09-07) The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency brought a lawsuit against Dannon Co., alleging that it had 10 spills or illegal discharges occurring at its plant since March 2004. The suit claimed that one such incident in Sept. 2005 caused the village wastewater treatment plant to malfunction and killed more than 33,000 fish in the Miami and Erie Canal. As part of a settlement reached, Dannon Co. has agreed to pay a little over $71,000 in penalties. Additionally, the company agreed to install an automated wastewater control system to ensure that such mishaps don't occur in the future. A Dannon spokesman stated that the New York-based company already has taken steps to comply with the settlement, including the installation of a multi million dollar wastewater treatment plant.
