Hollinger International

Chicago, IL: (Apr-26-07) The Canada Revenue Agency brought charges against The Sun-Times Media Group, Inc., known as Hollinger International, alleging that Sun-Times Media, which publishes the Chicago Sun-Times daily newspapers and dozens of community papers, had tax issues resulting from the disposition of certain Canadian operations in 2000. Incidentally, Hollinger International sold the bulk of its Canadian newspapers, including a half-ownership in the National Post and the former Southam papers in major markets, to CanWest Communications Group in 2000. Hollinger, controlled by Conrad Black, announced that it has agreed to settle the tax dispute with a $40 million payout. The announcement was made while a criminal trial for Black and three other former Hollinger senior executives continued in a Chicago courtroom. [TORONTO STAR: TAX SETTLEMENT]
