Denver, CO

Denver, CO: (Feb-22-07) In a lawsuit between state officials and attorneys representing inmates, a Denver judge issued contempt citations against the state hospital superintendent and the director of the department of human services for failing to provide court-ordered competency evaluations or treatment for inmates. The suit alleged that mentally ill inmates have waited for as long as six months for evaluations or treatment as a result of the backlog caused due to a lack of funding for staff and beds. A settlement agreement granted the hospital $1.6 million in emergency funding for a 20-bed facility that handled a backlog of 81 inmates. [ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS: MENTAL EVALUATIONS]
