Family Dollar Inc.

Between November 2003 and February 2004, Family Dollar Inc. sold approximately 9,000 electric blankets. During the same time, the company received about 40 reports of malfunctions with the electric blankets, including fire, scorching, or smoke damage; and nine reported injuries. Family Dollar issued a recall in March 2004, but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) alleges that the company did not report the problem to the government in a timely manner. Family Dollar Inc. has agreed to pay a $100,000 civil penalty to settle allegations by the CPSC that it failed to report defects with electric blankets. (Jul-17-06) [CONSUMER AFFAIRS]
