New Haven Correctional Center

A lawsuit was filed on behalf of 1,600 people arrested on minor charges who were allegedly illegally strip searched at the New Haven Correctional Center. From January 1998 through January 2001 a jail policy allowed full strip searches on everyone brought into the facility, regardless of the charges against them. During that same period, the state of Connecticut had a specific policy prohibiting strip searches of people charged with non-violent, non-drug related misdemeanors. A legislative committee has approved a bill that would pay a settlement of $2.5 million for illegal strip searches. (Apr-18-06) [BOSTON GLOBE]
