Philadelphia, PAThe high speed Amtrak train crash that happened last night in Philadelphia has reportedly claimed the lives of at least seven people and injured over 200. The train was recorded traveling at a speed of greater than 100 miles per hour in a section of track where the speed limit is half that, according to the New York Times.
At least 140 people have gone to hospitals in the surrounding areas, and six were taken to hospitals with critical injuries, officials said. Emergency service workers are still searching the train wreckage looking for survivors amidst furniture, luggage and metal sprawled across the crash site.
The train accident happened at a rail yard called Frankford Junction, northeast of downtown, where multiple freight and passenger routes converge, and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor makes one of its sharpest turns, requiring reduced speeds, the NY Times reports.
The train left Washington DC northbound for New York city when it jumped the tracks at roughly 9:30 pm Tuesday night, with 238 passengers and five crew onboard.
