Tomorrow is the most important day of your life

. By
You see it every day; a car is weaving in and out of traffic, speeding up then slowing down, tailgating or stopping abruptly. No, it’s not a drunk driver. It’s a cell phone driver.

Cell phones are used everywhere, but on the roadways they are dangerous. In about the time it takes to read this article, somewhere, a driver, distracted by a cell phone, will cause a serious or fatal accident. Victims and often their families are left in the wake, lawsuits ensue, and many turn to lawsuit funding as a financial safety net during this waiting period.

Most of us have probably experienced an accident or near accident because of a driver distracted with an electronic device. Too many drivers begin calls as soon as they enter their cars, simply because they can. Hands-free devices purport to be a solution to the risks of driver distraction, but that has proven to be untrue; hands-free devices do not prevent drivers from taking their minds off the road.

Vision is a vital sense when behind the wheel, yet, far too often, drivers “look at” but don’t “see” objects if that driver is distracted. Researchers call it “inattention blindness;” they compare the condition to tunnel vision. Although drivers are looking out the windshield, they do not process everything on the roadway necessary to effectively monitor their surroundings, seek and identify potential dangers, and react to unexpected and avoidable situations. Here is a classic example of what can happen when a driver is distracted in this manner:

The driver of a Ford Explorer slammed into a Dodge Viper stopped at a red light. A police investigation determined that the driver of the Explorer was traveling 50 mph and never touched his brakes before hitting the Viper. Phone records confirmed what other motorists witnessed; the man was talking on his cell phone as he sped past them shortly before the accident. The life of an 18-year-old girl was taken at the hands of this distracted driver.

Tomorrow is the most important day of your life. Don’t leave your loved ones with only memories of your existence. Don’t spend tomorrow trying to recover from injuries suffered in a serious accident. Don’t spend it trying to recover from the senseless death of someone who was killed because your phone call was more important than driving safely and attentively. Hang up before you drive; help make our roadways safer. Enjoy tomorrow.
