Colombian Plane Crash Kills One

A plane crash on a Colombian island in the Caribbean early Monday morning, has killed one person and injured at least five others.

According to a report on MSNBC the Boeing 737 was carrying 125 passengers, eight of whom are US citizens, and six crew members en route from Bogota to the resort island of San Andres located off the Nicaraguan coast.

The plane was reportedly struck by lightning shortly before it crash landed at 1:49 am local time. The pilot made an announcement about landing but suddenly hit short and slid onto the runway on its belly as the fuselage broke into three pieces. Passengers scrambled to free themselves from the wreckage.

Reports indicate that 99 passengers were taken to Amor de Patria Hospital on the island. The man who was killed has been identified as 65-year old Amar Fernandez de Barreto. The plane was operated by Aerovias de Integracion Regional SA.
