Natural Depression Treatment Could Help Avoid Paxil Birth Defects

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that natural treatments of depression could work as well as antidepressants, possibly helping patients to avoid Paxil birth defects, Fox News reports.

According to the news provider, a number of Americans have begun taking such antidepressant medications rather than attempting to change their personal behavior.

"Doctors are now medicating unhappiness," Maryland native Dr. Ronald Dworkin told the news source. "Too many people take drugs when they really need to be making changes in their lives."

The news source reports that George Washington University health analyst Thomas Moore previously examined a number of studies by drug companies related to antidepressants that had not been published. He reportedly concluded that 40 percent of the studies associated with such medications have not been published, likely because the drugs were not effective, the news provider said.

Paxil, one medication used to treat depression, has been linked to birth defects such as heart problems, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.
