Marshall, TXA manufacturer of bicycles is facing a lawsuit after a cyclist claims the handle bars on his bike collapsed, causing him to crash and suffer a severe brain injury, the Southeast Texas Record reports.
The lawsuit against Trek Bicycle Corp. was filed on behalf of Matthew Jacoby, who was riding his 2002 Trek 2000 road bike in September 2010, when the bicycle's steering fork allegedly fractured, which caused the handle bars to collapse.
According to the suit, Jacoby sustained an intracranial hemorrhage and a closed-head brain injury as he was allegedly thrown head-first into the pavement as a result of the handle bar collapse. The suit contends Jacoby has been in a coma since the accident occurred and claims medical officials have said he will not recover.
In the lawsuit, Jacoby's family is seeking damages for mental and physical pain, medical expenses, a loss of earning capacity and lost wages.
According to its Web site, Trek Bicycle Corp. was founded in 1976 and manufactures a variety of bikes.
