An amusement park accident has left a six-year old child dead and 18 people injured when a miniature train derailed in Spartanburg on Saturday.

The train is operated at Cleveland Park, and had 28 people on board at the time of the accident. Police Captain Art Littlejohn said the train went off the tracks around 1:00 pm. He said 15 children were taken to hospital with injuries, and two more were airlifted by helicopter to medical facilities. Two adults were also hospitalized. "The train derailed and came off the tracks," he said. "It overturned, and the people were thrown from the train."

Littlejohn said the train ride had opened at noon on Saturday, and that the tracks had just been inspected on the previous Wednesday.

The miniature train ride circles the playground area at Cleveland Park, which is operated by the Spartanburg County Parks Commission.
