Study Reveals Serious Accutane Side Effects

Chapel Hill, NCA recent study revealed that users of Accutane may suffer from a number of serious side effects, including inflammatory bowel disease.

The research concluded that previous exposure to isotretinoin, the generic name for Accutane, nearly quadrupled one's risk of developing ulcerative colitis, a painful gastrointestinal disorder.

While the study found no connection between Accutane and Crohn's disease, it did reveal that higher rates of exposure to isotretinoin put patients at greater risk of developing a number of inflammatory bowel diseases.

The study warns that health professionals prescribing Accutane should be aware of these potential risks, as should patients taking the medication.

Accutane first appeared in America in the early 1980s and was prescribed to more than 16 million people to treat acne. While the specific drug is no longer sold in America, isotretinoin is still found in Amnesteem and Claravis, generic versions of the medication.
