Three Dead, Three Injured in Helicopter Crash

Engine failure is the suspected cause of a helicopter crash on Catalina Island on Saturday, May 24. The accident left three people dead and another three seriously injured.

According to eye witnesses, the privately owned Eurocopter AS 350 lost control and crashed, throwing some passengers from the aircraft. The crash occurred within an hour of taking off.

The helicopter is owned by Island Express, who operates charters and tours of destinations in Southern California, including Catalina Island. In 1999 an Island Express sightseeing helicopter had to make a hard landing, which resulted in six passengers sustaining slight injuries.
