Two Million Children's Folding Chairs Recalled by Summit Marketing International

On May 24, 2005 Summit Marketing International LLC of Dublin, Ohio announced the recall of two million (2,000,000) children's folding chairs as a safety hazard to children. The firm has received seven reports of the chairs collapsing, resulting in four fingertip amputations, one laceration and bruises to children using the chairs.

This is the result of a defect that allows the chair's safety lock to fail, which causes the chair to collapse of fold unexpectedly. Children's fingers can become caught or trapped in the hinged or slotted areas of the hairs, posing a pinch or cut hazard. This can cause severe lacerations and fingertip amputations as has been reported.

The recalled children's folding chairs are made of metal tubing with a padded seat. Available in Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green colors, these were sold either separately or in combination with a small table and two, four, or six chairs, respectively. Each chair is 22 inches high, ten inches wide, and nearly eleven inches deep. On a label beneath the chairs it states, MANUFACTURED BY ZHANGZHOU STEEL TUBE FURNITURE FACTORY"

These children's folding chairs, manufactured in China, were sold in hardware, discount department, toy, grocery and drug stores throughout the United States from September 2002 to May 2005, for about $10 each or in sets costing about $45.

Consumers are warned to stop using this product immediately and to contact Summit for instructions on obtaining a kit to repair the chairs and return them to a safe condition.
