Medtronic AneuRx Stent Graft high death rate

The FDA has warned that patients who have received the AneuRx Stent Graft have higher than normal death rates.

The AneuRx stent graft system is used to treat abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). AAA is a condition where the aortic artery develops a bulge which can suddenly burst without warning.

The FDA claims that the death rate associated with AneuRx surgery is 2.3 percent - a rate that is substantially higher than the 0.18 percent rate for open surgical repair.

Several serious ruptures in patients treated with the Medtronic stent graft lead the FDA to issue product warnings in 2001 and 2003. Thirteen deaths out of 931 patients were cited by the FDA.
