McDonald's Recalling Shrek Glasses
McDonald's is recalling 12 million glasses because they contain cadmium, a toxic metal that poses health risks with long-term exposure. The biggest fast-food chain in the world has asked consumers to stop using the glasses, sold as a promotional tie-in to the latest "Shrek" movie, and return them for a full refund. No injuries have been reported.
The glasses were sold for about $ 2.49 without food and for $ 1.99 with food purchase. McDonald's is offering a refund of $3 per glass to the customers who are returning the glasses.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said the designs on the glasses contain the cadmium. A spokesperson for the CPSC said the glasses don't pose an "acute risk" to children as the amount of cadmium in them is slightly above a standard the commission is developing. McDonald's says the glasses met federal standards when tested by an independent third-party laboratory but chose to recall the items because of the CPSC's evolving assessment of standards for cadmium in consumer products.
On June 4, the Associated Press reported that the glasses were manufactured by ARC International North America Inc., of Millville, N.J., with ARC International based in France.
Cadmium was recently found in a variety of children's products after Wal-Mart voluntarily recalled some pieces of children's jewelry that were found to have high levels of the cadmium.
