Belkin Announces Recall of Batteries Sold with Bluetooth GPS Navigation System
Belkin Corporation of Compton, California announced on June 21, 2005 that it was recalling over about 10,300 Li-Polymer Ion Power Packs sold with the Bluetooth™ Global Positioning Navigation System (GPS). Belkin reports at least 15 known incidents where the battery have overheated or expanded and even ruptured due to overheating. While Belkin states that no injuries have been reported, the condition of the batteries involved is such that they pose a serious safety and fire hazard risk to users.
The recall involves Li-Polymer battery packs sold with Belkin Bluetooth™ GPS Navigation System models F8T051 and F8T051-DL. The GPS model number can be found on a label on the bottom of the unit. "Part No.: 300-203712001" and Model No.: AE-8210" are written on the side of the battery.
Manufactured in China, these batteries were sold by Belkin via their web site and through retailers nationwide and cost approximately $400 each.
Consumers are urged to stop using the batteries immediately and to contact Belkin for a free replacement.
