Balanced Health Products Announces Recall of Starcaps Dietary Supplement Capsules

Supplements Found with Undeclared Drug Ingredient

Balanced Health Products Inc. has announced that it is expanding its recall of Starcaps Diet System Dietary Supplements to include lot numbers 12/2009--82866 and 12/2010--83801. Both lots are sold in 30 capsule plastic bottles. The recall was announced when it was discovered that the supplements contain an undeclared drug ingredient--bumetanide--which is a prescription diuretic. Bumetanide is not listed on the supplements' product label but has been found in Starcaps at a level of 0.8 mg per capsule.

Risks associated with bumetanide include fluid and electrolyte loss and elevations of uric acid concentrations. Bumetanide can also interact with other drugs, including digoxin and lithium.
