Ameren

During the months of May and June in 2002, more than 43,000 fish, valued at $3.2 million, were killed at Bagnell Dam when heavy rains caused Ameren to release large amounts of water to keep the lake from flooding. The Missouri Conservation Department and the Clean Water Commission filed a lawsuit against the company for environmental damages. Ameren has agreed to pay $1 million into the Conservation Commission Fund and $300,000 into the Natural Resources Protection Fund as well as $2.1 million to the Missouri Division of State Parks to fight erosion and help put a law enforcement center at Lake of the Ozarks State Park. Under the settlement Ameren must also pay $175,000 a year for Fish and Wildlife Service projects and pay the Conservation Department $134,000 a year to stock fish and meet water quality standards.
