70,000 People May Have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder From 9/11

400,000 Believed to Have Suffered Serious Exposure to the Disaster

Results from a public heath registry following people involved in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on the World Trade Center, show that as many as 70,000 people may have developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of the attacks.

Estimates suggest that up to 400,000 people were exposed in a significant way to the terror event. Half the people tracked through the registry reported being in the cloud of debris generated as the twin towers collapsed, and 70 percent witnessed a plane hitting the tower or a body falling from the tower. Additionally, 13 percent reportedly sustained injuries during the event.

The registry tracks Lower Manhattan residents, area workers, recovery workers, commuters and people who pass by the site, for up to 20 years.
