NHTSA to Investigate Late Model Toyota Corollas over Steering Problems

. By
Washington, DCThe US government will undertake a formal investigation into complaints of steering problems with the 2009-2010 Toyota Corolla, the Washington Post reported today.

So far the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received over 150 complaints from Corolla owners regarding various defects. Some have complained of a problem with the steering whereby the vehicles start to wander back and forth at speeds of more than 60 miles per hour. Apparently the problem stops as quickly as it starts. Wheel vibration and exaggerated motions from small steering inputs have also been reported.

The NHTSA says that 363,000 Corollas from model year 2009 and an additional 136,000 from 2010 could be affected. It plans to investigate about 500,000 late model Corollas.

While Toyota has not announced an official recall of the 2009/2010 Corollas, it remains a possibility. To date, 7.86 million Toyota vehicles have been recalled over problems with the brakes and gas pedals.
