Another class action lawsuit against Ortho Evra Makers
. By Jennifer Aikman
A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc., a division of Johnson and Johnson Inc., on behalf of the estate of a 26-year-old woman.
According to the suit, she died from an acute pulmonary embolism after using the Ortho Evra birth control patch from November 26, 2002 to July 8, 2003. The suit was filed on July 13, 2006 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
On July 8, 2003, the young woman experienced difficulty breathing and collapsed in her home. When the paramedics arrived they found the woman in acute respiratory distress. She was taken to the emergency room at St. John Macomb Hospital in Michigan. After failure to respond to CPR and other life-saving measures she was pronounced dead that evening. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as an acute pulmonary embolism.
Pulmonary embolism is a sudden blockage in a lung artery, usually due to a blood clot that has travelled to the lung from the leg, but clots can also form in the pelvic vein. Recent reports have indicated that the risk of developing blood clots, pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke may be significantly higher with the Ortho Evra patch than with oral contraceptive use. In fact, the patch has been linked to the deaths of at least seventeen young American women over the past two years
The FDA has logged 9,116 reports of adverse reactions to the patch in a 17-month period. While Ortho Tri-Cyclen - a birth control pill - had only 1,237 adverse reactions reported over six years. During a 12-month period, 44 serious injuries or deaths have been associated with Ortho Evra, whereas only 17 such reports were linked to the birth control pill during a similar time period. These statistics are even more damning when you consider the fact that Ortho Tri-Cyclen has six times the number of users of Ortho Evra.
Ortho-McNeil, the manufacturer or the Ortho Evra birth control patch, has aggressively marketed the patch as a convenient alternative to oral birth control pills. Stylish ad campaigns and celebrity endorsements seem to have worked their magic with approximately 4 million women using the Ortho Evra Patch since it went on sale in 2002.
Would these 4 million women have been so quick to toss out their pills and put on the patch if they had known what Ortho-McNeil did? It is alleged that the drug company was aware of the increased medical risks associated with Ortho Evra before the drug was approved and that, once approved, the company failed to adequately warn patients about these risks. This is a horrific charge and if found guilty, Ortho-McNeil will face severe repercussions.
I am just seeing this thread for the first time. My 16 yr old daughter died from this pill in 2010. She was on it for a month and a half and had a pulminary embolism. A simple blood test is all that needed to be done to know she should have never been on any birth control. Doctors failed to mention this cause insurance companies frown on it. Anyone going on birth control needs to take a blood test first and find out if they carry a blood clot disorder gene. You will be amazed how many people carry a gene called factor V leiden. Since my daughters death every person I talk to about having a clot on birth control, all carried this gene and it gets passed on.

I'm 22 years old and I'm a mother of twins girl and boy. DEC.30th I was rush to the emergency room only to be transferred to the main hospital ER by ambulance I had and still have no insurance, but I was told I have a pulmonary embolism and if I would of waited one more day I would of died, my blood clotted in my lung causing the bottom of my right lung to almost completely die off if I would of waited any longer it would of. All of this only to ind out that at my age it is extremely rare but has been link to many young women using oral contraceptives, which I have been taking Ortho Tri Cyclen. So now hear I am can't even lift my 3 year old twins, can't do nothing really due to how bad my case was, only to find out I have to take it easy from now on and that I'll be one blood thinners the rest of my life, sound fun (not) but due to this I have lost my job and now I have thousands to pay in medical costs and I'm in a real low time in my life with everything that has happen and it kills me the most physically knowing I can't lift my kids without my chest hurting and I get short of breath real easily!!!! So if anyone knows who I can call and talk to I will greatly appreciate it more than you will ever know.

I was on the Ortho Novum pill in the 1970s and had a retinal thrombosis in my left eye causing loss of some peripheral vision and premature ovarian failure at 36. I had horrific menopausal symptoms with severe depression all through my twenties and thirties. It almost ruined my life, so I can empathize with these other women.

I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure at the age of 26. I have been told that it was likely because I was on birth control for several years which caused atrophy of my ovaries. I was taking tri-cyclen since the age of 16. I was never advised that I should take a break from these pills to help protect my ability to have children in the future. Is there currently or has there been any actions against the manufacturers of these medications? My life has been changed forever as it is impossible to reverse my condition and will never be able to have my own biological children.

I was on the Ortho Novum 7/7/7 28 day pill. I kept getting headaches but on Sept. 7th of this year I had an unusually bad headache and started vomiting...I was home alone so I called the ambulance because I knew something was not right....they transported me to the hospital, after some tests put me right in ICU, I had bleeding on my brain on both sides and the top of my head, this required surgery, while having surgery I ended up having a stroke, seizures, ended up getting blood clots in one of my legs and one of my arms, I did not get discharged from the hospital until Sept 24th, the Dr. advised my family that all this was caused because I was on birth control. I was released from the hospital with 12 different medications, I'm on the blood thinner Warafin so I have to go get my blood checked twice a week, I have to go to Physical Therapy twice a week and I still have not been released from the Dr. to return to work and because of this happening to me we are also struggling financially. If anyone can give me any information regarding class action lawsuits regarding this birth control pill

Pulmonary. Embolism. From orthodox tricyclen

I was put on Orthocept and was only on it for three weeks when I ended up in the emergency room with a pulmonary embolism on my lung . It was the scariest thing that's ever happened to me. I was on it to control cysts. Now I can never be on another estrogen again and I'll be on blood thinners probably for a year . I can't explain how upset I am. I get out of breath just walking from the bed to the bathroom. Never mind trying to go to my basement to do laundry. If anyone knows of a class action suit , please let me know.

I was on the Ortho-Novum patch in early 2000 and ended up needing a hysterctomy . Many days doubled over in pain trying to just get through the day. I lost more than my uterus and ovaries. It robbed me of my ability to have more children. Still dealing with all the effects of not having hormone producing ovaries.

I was on the Othro Cept pills for 3 years starting in 2010, I am 22 and had a Pulmonary Embolism from a clot that painfully started in my leg and made its way to my lung. I also have another clot on my groin. I had to go to the emergency room 3 times over the course of 2 weeks in substantial amount of pain for them to figure out what was wrong with me, I came way too close to losing my life. Now ill be on Coumadin for at least 3 months and have very restricted lung capacity in my left lung which doesn't seem to be going away :/

Is there any class action lawsuits regarding any of the or tho birthcontroll products? I developed a rare liver disease which required me to have a liver transplant. I now have to worry about other forms of cancer due to the anti rejection drugs I am now required to take. I was told by several attorneys that there are none but someone told me they heard this may no longer be the case. Has anyone also heard this? I have already developed one form of cancer due to anti rejection drugs and my quality of life has defiantly changed. I would appreciate any feedback available. I have three children and would like to make sure they are taken care of if I eventually pass due to cancer or transplant

I was given mostly all of the Ortho-Novum pills from the Ortho-Novum Lo to the Ortho-Novum 777 and also one to regulate my hormones. I recall a couple of occasions when these pills were the cause of my sickness. There were times when I had numbing pains in my legs and arms. Also I started having knots so to speak the doctor always told me I was fine but some of those same symptoms occur still today. I have often wondered how it is that no one bothered to tell me ( doctors) that's this was making me sick and yes it is documented it was between the years of 1995-1999.

If there is anybody out there that can assist me with these matter please feel free to e-mail me at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am currently on Warfin blood thinners for the nest five years of my life and hopefully after that I can be taken off of them but as of now its a must that I take them to be here with my children. So please, please contact me if you can help me. Stay blessed:)

I was on Ortho-Try-Cyl Lo Tabs and in September 22, 2010 I was rushed to the emergency room with breathing problems and thinking I was having a heart attack. Later learned from the hospital that I had multiple pulmonary embolisms (blood clots) of both lungs due to the pill. I am lucky to be alive. Is there a possible lawsuit?

I went on Ortho Tri-Cyclen in April of 2012, wanting to prevent myself from getting pregnant before my brothers wedding( which was then going to try for a baby after the wedding) and in July of 2012 I was in the ER with 3 pulmonary embolisms in my lungs and was told I was lucky I was still alive. I spent 3 days in the hospital, 3 weeks on Lovenox and then 6 months on Coumadin. I am only 33 years old and have also been told that I should not have any more children due to this. I was on the IUD Marina for several years and had no symtoms and also had 2 children after going off of it but as soon as I got on this birth control it has now changed my life.

I was put on Ortho-cept May of 2012 and have been suffering from repeated cyst on my left ovarie that have been rupturing and reforming this was diagnosed last week after being rushed into the E.R. they have since then palced me on another birth conyrol pill to see if it will stop the cysts from growing and eventually go away. but there not sure if there is any permanant damage at this point. Now we play the waiting game. In the meantime I wonder if the new birth control will cause damage? This is nothing an 18yr old healthy girl should ever have to go through.

I was on Ortro Tri-Cyclen from August/September to December 2009 and during that time, I was slowly losing blood and my hemoglobin reached to a 7, requiring me to get a blood transfusion of 3 whole units of blood.

I was on ortho novum for a total of 4 years and on depo provera for 1 year then on ortho again for another 3 years. I had many side effects and every time the dose was changed. I have developed cysts on both ovaries and twice I have had fibroid tumors, I had two of them removed 3 years ago. Did not decide to have a hysterctomy because I wanted to have one more child. Now the tumor came back and I will need to have uterus removed since the tumor has taken over. Therefore I will not be able to have that child I wanted. I blame all this on all that birth conrol I took and many years. Is there any lawsuit againts the manufacturers of this birth control? I will appreate your information.

I was perscribed Ortho Cept October 23 2007 and had two pulmonary embolisms that caused me to loose a portion of my right lung two months later. These are deadly meds... They are third generation birth controll pills with senthetic hormones in them that are putting women at high risk of serious injury and death. Why hasn't anybody taken on these cases to better protect us!

I was given Ortho-Novum in August of 2009 I began taking the medication in November of 2009 & by March 2010 I was in ICU with blood clots. I almost lost one of my legs due to the clot. I spent approximately 20 days in the hospital & was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis. For the rest of my life I have an increase chance of getting blood clots which could kill me I also will have to take medicine until the day I die to prevent me from getting more clots. How do I go about taking legal action against this company? This medical condition has affected my life in several ways none of which are good.

I am trying to find out some information about any types of lawsuits against the birth control pill Ortho-Novum. I starting taking the birth control pill back in October of 2009, and in less then a month I developed blood clots in both of my lungs and almost died. I suffered a pulmonary embolism and was hospitalized for a week and then placed on blood thinners for 6 months. As a result I can no longer take any type of birth control. Is there any information on a possible lawsuit against the makers of the Ortho-Novum birth control pill?
