Denver Health Medical Center agrees to pay $4 million settlement in wrongful death lawsuit.

Denver, CO: (May-29-08) The family of Emily Rae Rice brought a wrongful death lawsuit against Denver Health Medical Center, after the inmate died while in custody at Denver City Jail. Medical records indicate that 24-year-old Rice died Feb. 19, 2006, in the jail 20 hours after she was released from the hospital. She died from a lacerated spleen and liver, and bled to death from injuries she sustained in a drunken-driving crash. Following the death, the family sued in US District Court against Denver Health.

Sources familiar with the negotiations confirmed that the two sides had reached a settlement agreement, in which Denver Health Medical Center agreed to pay the family $4 million. Under the terms of the deal, Denver Health also agreed to significant changes in patient screening and treatment both at the medical center and the jail. Sources stated that the Rice family was gratified by the changes that Denver Health agreed to make, particularly checking patients for vital signs at intake and release and every four hours.
