Land West Ventures reaches undisclosed settlement in wrongful death lawsuit.

Denver, CO: (May-29-08) The family of late Jeffrey Garrett, a former Qwest executive, brought a lawsuit against Georgia-based Land West Ventures, which does business in CO as Bear Wallow Ranch, after Garrett died of a gunshot wound in 2005 while turkey hunting near New Castle. Records of the incident show that Garrett made a turkey call while concealed behind some brush, and that Oscar Hoyos DeLaCruz, a ranch hand, mistakenly shot what he thought was a turkey. The wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Garrett's wife, Charlotte, and her two children. They alleged that another Land West employee provided DeLaCruz a company rifle and that the two fled without aiding Garrett. Officials state that the company also didn't disclose to authorities investigating Garrett's death that DeLaCruz, an illegal immigrant, had access to a gun and had fled to Mexico. Sources close to the lawsuit stated that the two sides had reached a settlement, in which both sides didn't reveal any terms to the public.
