Six Die in Fire

Cook County, IL: (Apr-22-08) A series of wrongful death lawsuits were brought against Cook County by victims of the 2003 fire at the county's downtown Chicago administration building that killed six people. Records showed that the lawsuit named six defendants, the county being one of them. In a recent development in the case, sources stated that a settlement agreement had been reached in the case, in which the county agreed to pay $9 million to resolve the lawsuits. Court records indicate that Aargus Security, a security company settled for $11 million, and the other four defendants settled for a total of $6 million. Reports of the disaster showed that six workers died after they became trapped in smoke-filled stairways. The settlement was confirmed by the legal counsel representing the county.
