Immigrant Discrimination

Houston, TX: (Mar-12-08) Mexican immigrant employees brought a lawsuit against Shipley Do-Nuts, alleging sexual harassment. Sources stated that some supervisors at Shipley Do-Nuts sexually harassed and regularly used slurs against Mexican immigrant employees. In their lawsuit, immigrant employees alleged that Hispanic and white supervisors threatened them with deportation and referred to them as "wetbacks." The workers also claimed that supervisors forced them to work off the clock, provided few breaks and demanded money in exchange for vacations or permission to see a doctor when injured on the job.

The court papers stated that the supervisors' actions often went unchecked because Shipley executives did not speak Spanish and worked mostly in the main office. As part of settlement reached both the parties agreed to settle the lawsuit to avoid future litigation. [STAR TELEGRAM: SHIPLEY SETTLES DISCRIMINATION LAWSUIT WITH EMPLOYEES]
