Assistant Principal Termination

Ventura County, CA: (Feb-27-08) Former Assistant Principal Becky Romano brought a wrongful termination lawsuit against the Oxnard Union High School District, alleging that she was forced out of her job after suffering a work related injury in 2003 that required a long convalescence. She alleged the district asserted she was physically unable to perform her duties after returning to work as an assistant principal at Rio Mesa High School in August 2004. She sued after the boards decision to terminate her services.

In a recent development in the two year old lawsuit, Oxnard Union High School District officials said that the two sides had reached a settlement agreement, in which the district will pay Romano $150,000 to resolve the wrongful termination lawsuit. District officials claim that it has cost them over $532,123 to fight the suit. The district stressed that the litigation costs are covered by its insurer, Ventura County Schools Self-Funding Authority, which covers a number of public school districts. Spokespersons claimed that the district agreed to settle to stem litigation costs. Romano now works as a high school principal in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
