Ferry Crash

New York, NY: (Feb-21-08) Shriram Agni brought a personal injury lawsuit against the city, after he lost a leg in the crash of a Staten Island ferry in October 2003. Records show that the incident took place when the ferry slammed into a concrete pier on Staten Island, killing 11 people and leaving dozens of passengers injured. Sources close to the case revealed that the city has settled about two-thirds of 186 personal injury claims in connection with the crash, for a total of more than $34 million. The latest suit stated that Agni, 61, was on his way home from work on Oct. 15, 2003, when the ferry crashed. A state employee, he returned to work a year after the crash. As part of a settlement reached with him, the city agreed to a $6.5 million payout, resolving the personal injury lawsuit. City officials said that the largest payments were about $9 million each to a man and a woman who lost both legs. [NEW YORK TIMES: FERRY CRASH]
